The 100% organic state of Sikkim and the first organic state in the world bested 51 nominated policies from 25 countries to claim the prestigious Future Policy Award of 2018! Sikkim implemented total ban on the sale and use of chemical pesticides in the state and has uplifted the socioeconomic and cultural aspects of the community as well as the state’s health, education, rural development and sustainable tourism. As a result, more than 66,000 farming families have benefited from the organic transition as Sikkim continues to be an inspiration to the rest of the organic community.
The Arms to Farms Program of Kauswagan, Philippines got the Future Policy Award Honorable Mention. What used to be a war-torn municipality has now become an organic agriculture pioneer in the country and has used organic agriculture to solve hunger, bring peace and drastically change the lives of the people in the community. As a result, former rebels exchanged their arms to agricultural tools and have since became organic farmer champions in their respective areas, ending the violent war that has plagued the community for a very long time.
Both Sikkim and Kauswagan are very active members of IFOAM Asia and ALGOA and have been instrumental in the growth of IFOAM Asia and organic agriculture in the region.
The Future Policy Award awards the world’s best laws and policies promoting agroecology. It is the only award which honors policies on an international level. The awards will be given in Rome, Italy on the 15th of October, 2018.
